Dear Mr. Harper

Letters to the Canadian Prime Minister

Fitness, Toxins, and Medicare

02 June 2006, 11:18 CST

Dear Mr. Haper,

There was much debate over health-care during the lead-up to the last Federal election. However, there was little talk about the root causes of poor health that strain Medicare. Recent studies have highlighted two of these roots:

First, our children received a failing grade for their overall fitness levels from Active Healthy Kids Canada. Although 80% to 90% of parents would classify their kids' activity levels as "good", less than half of Canadian children and young people meet minimum daily physical-activity requirements.

Second, a study by Environmental Defence found that the average Canadian body contains a shocking number of known toxins. Study volunteer Ada Dowler-Cohen, had the following poisons in her body: 18 carcinogens, 14 chemicals that disrupt hormones, 19 that affect reproduction and development and 9 toxic to the brain and nervous system. She is ten years old.

Do Tory plans to improve our health-care system address these and similar "root causes" of poor health?

Kind Regards.
